The fifth day of the fifth lunar month, the Dragon Boat Festival—China's first traditional festival to be inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list.
Its origins extend far beyond Qu Yuan. Ancient dragon worship for blessings, midsummer warding off disease and evil—three layers of culture overlap, emphasizing both loyalty and health.
Three key customs: Zongzi (sticky rice dumplings) encapsulating the flavors of both northern and southern China; dragon boat racing evolving from a sacrificial ritual into an international sporting event (included in the 2010 Asian Games); and mugwort sachets conveying wishes for health.
Inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2009, dragon boat racing has now been seen in Frankfurt, Toronto, and Rio de Janeiro. A Zongzi, a race, connecting the globe.
